Easy Bike Ride Victor Harbor Foreshore

Our plan for the Easter long weekend was to travel to Victor Harbor and stay a night with family so we could spend some time sight seeing, something we normally don’t have a chance to do on our normal day trips to Victor Harbor when visiting family. As we were staying in the coastal town we thought we would to load up the bikes and go for a leisurely ride along the Norfolk Pine lined, foreshore from the Bluff to the centre of Victor Harbor and back.

By the time we had arrived in Victor Harbor it was past midday and we were both ready for a bite to eat. Being aware of a couple of places along the foreshore where we could stop for some lunch. we ended up at Pa’s fish cafe, located about 1-2 km from our starting point at the base of the Bluff. Here we grabbed an outdoor table so we could easily keep an eye on the bikes, which we leant up against the outside railings.

After lunch we rode straight on through to the township of Victor Harbor, taking in the sights along the foreshore and the boardwalk across to Granite Island. We then cycled on a little more, to the Train Station, home to several, beautifully restored, steam locomotives. As we arrived we noticed people boarding the carriages that were unhooked from a train, we waited around to see the Steam Locomotive reverse in and hook up the carriages and head off to Goolwa.

While we were on the station platform, the locomotive driver talked to Marion about our Beach Cruisers, he suggested that we should load the bikes on to the steam train and get off at Port Elliott and then ride back to Victor Harbor. A great idea and we certainly plan to do this ride in the near future. Not only will we get to ride our bikes around a very picturesque part of our state, but we also get to take a nostalgic ride on a lovely old steam train.

Our ride back along the foreshore was at a leisurely pace, with regular stops so that Marion could photograph the scenery and varied bird life along the way. We were fortunate to have very good cycling weather on the day, and although overcast, the temperature was mild and the wind almost non existent. This area can get quite gusty at times so it is worthwhile checking out the forecast before making the journey.
